ABOUT BLU-RAY
Blu-ray Disc referred to as BD is the next generation High Definition optical disc
format developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association comprising a consortium of leading
consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturing companies including
Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung,
Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thompson.
Blu-ray also enjoys the support of all the major movie studios and their affiliates including Sony Entertainment, Walt Disney Pictures (Buena Vista), Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal and Paramount.
The Blu-ray format was developed to record and playback High Definition Video (HD)
with unsurpassed detail and clarity. The discs can store large amounts of data with
over 5 times the capacity of a standard DVD. A single layer Blu-ray disc can hold
25GB of data and a dual layer disc can hold 50GB. TDK are in the process of developing
even larger multi layer discs with capacities of 100GB and 200GB.
Standard DVD and CD devices use a red laser to read data, where as Blu-ray as the
name suggests uses a blue light laser which has a much shorter wavelength making
it possible to read more tightly packed data with much greater precision.
Many DVD players currently in the market place have HDMI (high speed data transfer)
connections and are capable of up scaling standard DVDs; this means they can improve
the image quality to somewhere approaching High Definition. However this is not
and never will be regarded as true High Definition. As mentioned earlier standard
DVD uses a red laser to read data and as such is not compatible with HD Blu-ray
discs. On the other hand Blu-ray players are backward compatible. By combining a
red laser and blue laser in the one machine Blu-ray players can upscale standard
DVDs, play CDs and Blu-ray High Definition discs.
